Research Scientist I

Department: Baliga
Location: Seattle, WA

The Baliga group is seeking an outstanding Research Scientist to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to dissect host-pathogen interactions in tuberculosis. We are seeking applicants with diverse skillsets in technology development, computational modeling, and laboratory experimentation to develop innovative systems biology approaches for characterizing complex pathogen phenotypes. Active projects in the laboratory are focusing on understanding the evolution of antimicrobial resistance in tuberculosis at a systems scale but in mechanistic detail and at single cell resolution. The driving motivation is to develop novel systems biology and ML/AI approaches to shorten treatment regimen for TB, while preventing the emergence of AMR. Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to participate and contribute to ongoing projects, and also pursue their own research interests. The position offers unique international collaboration opportunities to translate basic science advances towards clinical applications, such as development of diagnostics and therapeutics, including point-of-care devices.

Who should apply? Applicants must hold a PhD and 2-4 years of postdoctoral experience. Successful candidates will have cross-disciplinary training in systems biology, computational biology, microbiology, biostatistics, applied mathematics, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates who have research experience, such as in the development of novel technologies, and the design and implementation of novel algorithms for systems analyses and modeling. Candidates with complementary experience in the wet lab (e.g. bacterial culture, flow cytometry, mouse models) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Strong analytical skills, a track record demonstrating scientific creativity, excellent communication skills, and the potential to thrive in an interdisciplinary research environment are essential.

Applicants should include a CV and a brief (one page) cover letter summarizing their background and future research interests.
